Sometimes I just can't help myself. If I'm over at the Goodwill Oulet and see some sort of transportation-related object I'll go ahead and grab it. At $0.79/lb why the hell not?

Almost as if the Torchbug and Orlove’s Baja had a lovechild:

.79 cents a pound? Your goodwill sells stuff by the pound! That’s awesome.

Yeah, it’s the outlet center, the place where the stuff that is unsold from the retail stores, or stuff that isn’t good enough for the retail stores, ends up. Most major cities that have Goodwill retail stores will have an outlet center somewhere nearby. The items are either overpriced, and thus unsold, or broken in some way. Books are a good deal because they sell them for $0.15/inch, measured based on the thickness. I’ve found all sorts of classics for $0.15/each because of the thickness.
I like to grab DirecTV and Dish HD DVRs for a couple of bucks and yank out the hard drives for use elsewhere. If you need cheap clothes for crawling under the car this is a good source (although I have found some in pretty nice shape that I wear regularly). There always seems to be lots of 8-track tapes, so if you want to go full retro in your malaisemobile this place is the source for music. Finding actual Lego pieces is possible, although a lot of the time they are loose in the bin and you have to spend some time picking them out, but given the price it’s worth it.
I did find a beat-to-hell 2008 MacBook Pro over there, and for a few bucks restored it to operational condition; I still use it on a regular basis. They’re not supposed to sell computers, but sometimes they make it out to the floor. Since everything is sold by weight, if the item is in a bag they don’t know what they’re selling you, nor do they seem to care. One of my favorite acquisitions is one of those SodaStream machines; I like plain carbonated water, maybe with a touch of lemon, and with this thing I can make plenty.
Everything is in those giant blue bins. You have to do some digging, so bring some thick gloves; I keep a set of those mechanic’s gloves in my car for this purpose. It can get hairy when new bins are rolled out as people shove and crowd and push to get the newest stuff. It’s quite a show, watching people nearly get into fights over borderline garbage.

Dude, this is pretty cool. Why can't the UK have places like this?

It’s missing the nose gear and one horizontal stabilizer, but, well, whatever - I still dig it.

Glad to help. Here’s a link to the location of the outlet stores; hopefully there’s one close to you: http://www.gwoutletstorelocator.com/
